Burlak all-terrain vehicle will be involved in the reconstruction of the Vostok Research Station in Antarctica

27.11.2019 EXPEDITIONS

The vehicle was delivered to the southern continent by sea from Saint Petersburg.

In the 2020–2021 season, the modules of the new wintering complex will be manufactured and delivered to Antarctica. In 2021, installation of the first part of the Vostok Polar Station will start, and it will be completely ready in 2022. But now preparatory work is underway at the site.

The newest Russian all-terrain vehicle Burlak will run between the coastal station Progress and Vostok, which is more than 1,400 km one way.

The vehicle is designed to carry 12 people, it has 10 berths. Everything in Burlak is provided for a comfortable stay of people during long journeys. It is equipped with a galley with gas burners, a hood and a folding table, a 20-liter snow-melting device to get drinking hot water, an automatic water supply system, convenient shelves and lockers, sockets, USB connectors for gadgets, autonomous interior heaters. Additionally, a portable toilet and a TV are installed in the vehicle.

Burlak can simultaneously carry two tons of cargo and nine passengers in the interior. A single-axle trailer with a load capacity of 1.5 tons and a capacity of 2.6 cubic meters is supplied with the vehicle. The vehicle range in an autonomous mode with the built-in tanks is 2500 km.

In 2016-2019, Burlak all-terrain vehicles passed extreme tests in expeditions to the Arctic and were named by experts as the best vehicles for snow deserts. On the opposite side of the planet, conditions are even more severe. The vehicle will rise to a mark of 3488 m above sea level, where the average annual temperature is 55 ° C below zero. This required minimal improvement from the designers.

"Mass-produced vehicle of the expedition modification has headed off to Antarctica. The only nontypical feature is that double glazing is able to compensate internal pressure through the valve. At an altitude of 3500 m, the pressure is much less, due to such a difference, a pressure of up to 0.5 kg/cm occurs inside sealed double glazing. If you don’t reduce the pressure, then the double glazing will be simply torn up, so we had to mount the valves," Aleksei Makarov, the Chief Designer of Makar Offroad LLC, said.
